As I continue my search for an Avatar, this work of art by Vermeer captured my eye.
There is something so beautiful about the woman in this painting. I wonder what she ponders as she pours the milk she labored for. The table displays a bounty of food; the colors and textures of the painting arouse a very romantic feeling within me…it pleases my eye.
This woman is robust and feminine all at the same time; she wears the appropriate attire for her position, time period and season.
Who is she? Is she a young girl of 16? A mother? daughter? sister? If she is married, does she nurse her husband? I never would have thought that in my previous life. But now I can’t help but wonder.
What do you picture in your mind’s eye when you think of a milkmaid?

To answer your question, my first thoughts are of a young, 16ish lady, working as a servant in another’s home. But looking more carefully the modesty of the room (notice the broken window pane?) move me more toward the feeling that this is her home.
The stare she has for the pouring milk is intense. The fact that she is looking there makes you look too! I agree, she appears robust yet feminine at the same time, very alluring.
Given my joy for ANR I cannot help but imagine that she is thinking about times to come when she won’t just be pouring milk from a cow into an stoneware dutch oven to pasteurize it, but of the time her lover will tenderly flow her milk just as she so carefully pours out the fruits of her labors.

My sentiments exactly! I also read that there is a cupid located near the foot warmer and that this implies a sensual idea…as she ponders her lover.
